These artworks reflect the visual interpretations of the philosophical concepts presented in Jacques Derrida’s ‘Of Grammatology.’ Each piece showcases intriguing, atmospheric compositions, incorporating recurring motifs like luminous panels, windows, and intricate patterns. Each series of twelve images is based on different versions using the same seed or base image.

AI-generated process

Image generation involves using unusual prompts or descriptions, here a quote from Derrida’s text:

„We know that these exchanges only take place by way of the language and the text, in the infrastructural sense that we now give to that word. And what we call production is necessarily a text, the system of a writing and of a reading which we know is ordered around its own blind spot. We know this a priori, but only now and with a knowledge that is not a knowledge at all, thus illustrating the critical relationship between text and imagery.“

The images are generated programmatically using sequences of 16 digits of pi as seeds. They are then resized using ON1 Resize AI and adjusted in Capture One Pro, with the prompt added to the resulting image in Affinity design. The final digital negative is output using the PiezoDN technique. Finally, each image is printed on watercolour paper and sometimes toned to achieve the intended tonal scale.

Cyanotype photographs: the process

These images are not mere photographs but a testament to the meticulous artistry of the cyanotype process, which traces its origins back to 1842. A solution of photosensitive iron salts is delicately painted upon watercolour paper. Once dry, a digital negative is carefully sandwiched with the paper and illuminated with ultraviolet light. The resulting blue image is a cyanotype photograph, a unique and captivating art form. The final process for this series of generated cyanotype photographs is not the same for all images. Some are left untoned and, therefore, keep their characteristic blue colour. Others are lightly bleached, either in a solution made from white Aleppo oak gall apples, producing iron grey blacks and reddish grey hues, or a solution from red pine bark, which tints the paper and gives the image a characteristic reddish-brown hue.

Each image results from careful composition, skillfully capturing the raw energy of street scenes. The photographer’s expert use of close-up shots draws attention to the intricate details of everyday objects, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the captivating beauty of their surroundings. The prints are masterfully executed in a nuanced spectrum of warm greys, evoking a profound sense of nostalgia that imbues each piece with rich emotion and depth.

Generated images

The images in the sequence vary on similar parameters set within Stable Diffusion. The prompt for generation is a quotation from the chapter ‘Le ritornello’ in Deleuze and Guattari’s ‘Mille plateaux’: „Sometimes, one leaves the territorial assemblage for other assemblages or for somewhere else entirely: interassemblage, components of passage, or even escape. “

Fine art photographs: the printing process

These images are printed on an Epson SC P800 printer, modified for Piezography Pro carbon inks, on Hahnemühle Baryta FB 350 g paper, a process that provides archival-quality prints.

Captured near a roadside in Gothenburg, Sweden, these cyanotype photographs entitled "Bound" showcase a striking scene of urban nature full of character.

A steep cliffside looms over the street, restrained by wire netting to prevent any potential rockfall. Below, natural flora and fauna push through the restraints, creating a captivating interplay between the rugged rock face and the resilient vegetation—the juxtaposition of the uneven cliff and the lush growth results in a visually dramatic and stunning composition.

I then proceeded to bleach the image lightly before toning it in a solution made from white Aleppo oak gall apples, adding depth and character to the composition with darker iron grey and lighter reddish brown hues.

Camera technique

I captured these photos using a Fujifilm GFX 100s camera with an 80mm f/1.7 lens. The camera features a medium format sensor and exceptional optics, resulting in highly detailed and high-quality images.

One of a series of twenty black-and-white giclee fine art photographs." width="384" height="300" />The „Erebus“ series consists of twenty black-and-white giclee fine art photographs that capture the essence of modern times. These images are inspired by the contrast between nature and urbanization in Mossen, a parkland area surrounded by highrises. They have been processed to evoke a gothic, almost primordial feeling that reflects the uncertainties of our world. The title „Erebus,“ which refers to a personification of darkness in Greek mythology and a place of darkness in the underworld on the way to Hades, encapsulates this feeling.

Fine art photographs: the process

These are cyanotype photographs that are created using AI-generated images via Stable Diffusion. With their unexpected and unusual nature, the resulting images attain a family resemblance within each of the three different series. These technological beings are strange, convoluted, and uncanny in many ways based on familiar images that have been reworked via obscure algorithms. Yet, they also possess a unique beauty, sometimes eerily unsettling but always captivating.

AI-generation procedure

The image generation involves using unusual prompts or descriptions, such as excerpts from theoretical texts like The Originality of the Avant-garde by Rosalynd E. Krauss. Each quote addresses a specific issue in contemporary art; the resulting images capture these issues. The images are generated programmatically using the first 150 digits of the number pi as seeds.

For this series the final process is. not. the same for all images.

Each fine art photograph beautifully captures the house garden’s unique textures and nuanced shades as the last remnants of snow yield to spring awakening. Utilizing carbon-based ink, these prints guarantee unparalleled quality and attention to detail.

Fine art photographs: the process

I make these prints using a specially adapted and crafted printing process, using specialized carbon-based inks to achieve maximum detail and archival quality. The images are printed on 350gsm Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta paper using a modified Epson SureArt P800 printer.

Camera technique

I shot these images on a Fujifilm GFX 100s camera with a 65mm f/2.8 lens. This camera has a medium-format sensor that, combined with exquisite optics, produces images of extreme detail and quality.

These striking images offer diverse perspectives, showcasing the breathtaking Icelandic landscape in all its glory. The initial photographs exude a sense of nostalgia, drawing inspiration from the neo-romantic Scandinavian paintings of the late 19th century and subtly influenced by the esteemed Icelandic landscape artist Þórarinn B. Þorláksson. As the sequence progresses, the images become more intense and dramatic, evoking a profound sense of awe and exhilarating peril.

The serene landscapes are evocatively transformed into scenes teeming with tumult and peril, heightened by the pervasive influence of modern technology. The intricate mesh of effects created by the forest’s branches, bare leaves, fallen trees, and broken branches starkly contrasts the dominating presence of modernist structures looming overhead. This collection masterfully depicts the captivating dynamic between nature and human ingenuity.

Each image is a window into Athens’s extraordinary charm and timeless elegance, inviting viewers on an immersive visual odyssey through its historic thoroughfares and captivating scenery.

Shooting technique

I shot the images using a vintage Leica IIIc camera from 1943, with a Summitar 5cm f/2 lens, on Ricoh Retro 400 film. After processing them, I photographed the negatives and retouched them in Capture One before printing full-size digital negatives for contact printing.

This specific section of the structure holds great historical importance, beautifully constructed by the renowned Turkish-Armenian architect Mikayel Nurican in 1912. The images effortlessly capture the enduring allure of the building’s interior spaces. During the post-production process, the photographs were thoughtfully enhanced with subtle nods to the stylistic influences of the esteemed Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi, imbuing the collection with a truly distinctive and artistic flair.

Fine art photographs: the process

The images are meticulously printed on 350gsm Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta paper using an advanced Epson SureArt P800 printer. This specific printing technique ensures that the prints possess outstanding archival properties, allowing them to maintain their quality and mesmerizing appearance for many years.

Camera technique

I used my Sony Alpha a6600 camera with a Tamron 11–19mm f/2.8 lens to capture these stunning images. I then meticulously enhanced the intricate details and tones of the magnificent historic building using Capture One Pro, a professional photo editing software known for its powerful tools and precise colour-grading capabilities.

Each photo skillfully captures the raw power of the waves as they fiercely crash against the distinctively shaped rocks that define this enchanting shoreline. The images depict nature’s force and highlight this coastal area’s unique and mesmerizing scenery. In this way, they can convey the dynamic energy and rugged elegance of the Sferracavallo coastline and seascape.

Silfurlausn er borin á bómullarpappír, tölvuunnin negatíva lögð yfir og myndirnar kontaktprentaðar í útfjólubláu ljósi. Þessar myndir voru síðan tónaðar í gulllausn til að tryggja endanleika og gefa myndinni einkennandi blæ. Myndirnar eru teknar í skóginum að Skógum í Þorskafirði, þaðan sem langamma mín er.
Callotypes are a method of making photographs that became popular in the last decade of the 19th century. A silver solution is applied to cotton paper, a computer-generated negative is overlaid, and the images are contact-printed in ultraviolet light. These images were then toned in a gold solution to ensure finality and give the image a characteristic touch. The photos are taken in the forest at Skóg in Þorskafjörður, where my great-grandmother is from.

Arenella, an ancient fishing village and resort situated on the edge of Palermo harbour, marks the outermost point of this spiral. This project captures the spirit of this historic Mediterranean city by providing unique perspectives from the selected locations, presenting Palermo in a new and unconventional light. Using alternative media to create the final images adds layer of enchantment to the resulting visual representations.

A spiral, named the „Greensboro Spiral“, was laid out over Greensboro and the surrounding area, with the outermost point in the industrial town of High Point and a central point in the city centre. There were shooting locations at five points of the spiral in between. The works were brought to life as a performance using a U-Haul vehicle specially equipped for art, called „The Art Truck“. Over the seven days of the project, I delivered each day’s output to the Greensboro Project Space in downtown Greensboro and installed it. The project was a collaboration with the Fine Arts Department of Greensboro College of Art; their students created their own photographs based on the project’s idea and installed them along with my photos at the exhibition.

At the thermal springs in Laugarvatn, southern Iceland, I had the opportunity to capture the breathtaking natural beauty using my vintage Second World War Leica camera and colour film stock. The camera’s historical significance added an extra layer of depth to the experience, while the film’s specific colour characteristics beautifully enhanced the surreal ambience of the surrounding landscape. The resulting images are stunning, with vibrant colours and a timeless aesthetic that perfectly encapsulates the unique atmosphere of the thermal springs.

These are produced and printed in archival quality on the best paper.
The photographs focus on the close-up shots of the plants as they undergo the gradual process of decay, unveiling a mesmerizing array of natural textures and intertwining patterns. The visual allure of these scenes is further enhanced by the cyanotype process, promising to immerse and fascinate our audience.

I then lightly bleached the image before toning it in tannic acid, adding depth and character to the composition with darker iron grey and lighter reddish brown hues.
